Taí um livro que deveria ser lançado no Brasil. Com todo esse boom de livros eróticos à venda, é interessante como esse vasto material afetou a vida de cada um dos participantes desse pequeno clube do livro.
Mas vamos aos personagens: Estelle Humphreys é dona de uma pequena cafeteria na cidade de Bristol. Divorciada, 42 anos e mãe de um adolescente, ela não tem tempo para namorar desde que se separou. Sua vida consiste em tocar o seu negócio, cozinhar as guloseimas para a cafeteria e cuidar do filho de 14 anos. A única coisa que faz para se divertir, mas que já está incorporada à rotina do fim de semana, é ir assistir o filho jogar futebol aos domingos, quando então ela não trabalha.
Os negócios não iam exatamente mal, mas Estelle queria dar uma aquecida, principalmente depois de ver os seus vizinhos da frente, terem de fechar as portas de sua livraria depois de 30 anos porque os negócios não davam mais lucro. Como uma sugestão indireta da vizinha, Estelle decide fazer um anúncio e criar um clube do livro, que se reuniria às quintas, a cada 15 dias.
Rebecca é casada com Andy há uns 5 anos. Aos 33 anos e ainda sem filhos, ela acha que o casamento chegou naquele ponto em que nada de novo acontece. Eles se amam, é claro, mas as novidades e os pequenos prazeres presentes na época da conquista e namoro há muito acabaram. Ela decidiu participar do clube por sugestão do marido.
Reggie tem seus 30 e poucos anos e está terminando seu doutorado. Sua tese diz respeito à evolução do tipo de leitura, e participar como ouvinte de um, lhe daria material suficiente para sua escrita.
Sue tem 62 anos e ela e o marido estão aposentados. Mesmo tendo todo o tempo livre, ela ainda age nos horários de antes e se sente incomodada de como o marido consegue ficar o tempo todo entre lendo o jornal do dia e assistindo TV. Definitivamente ela precisa preencher o seu tempo saindo e encontrando outras pessoas.
Gracie tem 20 e poucos anos, trabalha na biblioteca local e é a feminista do grupo. Sua opinião a respeito de como a mulher moderna se deixa oprimir nas várias formas de submissão é sempre expressa com muita convicção.
Este grupo tão heterogêneo encontra-se pela primeira vez e conversam sobre um livro clássico. Mas apesar da conversa, o clima não parece fluir bem e Estelle teme que seu clube do livro afunde antes mesmo de começar. É quando um livro erótico que ela estava lendo na ocasião é visto pelos outros participantes, e eles resolvem arriscar na leitura dele para o próximo encontro. Foi dada a largada ao clube do livro erótico.
Pela narrativa você identifica que o sucesso do tal livro, chamado 10 Sweet Lessons, de C J Jones, é um livro nos moldes 50 Tons, ou talvez até um pouco mais picante. Mas sem sombra de dúvida as opiniões sobre ele no encontro seguinte foram muito mais calorosas.
O ponto aqui não era se ter sexo selvagem é melhor ou não, mas sim que não importa a sua idade, seu biotipo, você pode ter uma vida sexual mais prazerosa com seu parceiro. O tal livro, e as leituras seguintes, começam a mostrar isso aos participantes e eles tentam interagir de acordo com as pessoas com as quais estão envolvidos.
Estelle ainda estava sozinha desde o divórcio, mas o professor de futebol de seu filho começa a rondar; Reggie e Gracie passam a se conhecer melhor; Rebecca age ousadamente com o marido, que entra no jogo dela. Só Sue que encontra dificuldade junto ao marido já que ele - assim como muitos na idade dele, 65 anos - acha que nessa idade não há sequer necessidade de se ter intimidade sexual com seu parceiro.
O livro é muito bem escrito, com vários trechos de diálogos ótimos. Fala sobre um tema atualíssimo, num ritmo maravilhoso que te faz não querer largar o livro até terminar a leitura. É leve, te faz sorrir e desejar que coisas boas aconteçam.
A conexão com os personagens é imediata porque eles são críveis. As passagens ocorridas, os pensamentos dos personagens, são totalmente verossímeis, poderia acontecer com qualquer um.
Além do que, mais um vez, poder ler um livro solo, é maravilhoso.

Como trilha sonora, nada como voltar aos anos 50 - tema de uma festa em que os personagens participam - e ouvir Ella Fitzgerald cantando Summertime...

Estelle Humphreys owns a small coffee shop in Bristol. Divorced, 42 years old and mother of a teenager, she has no time to date since her divorce. Her life consists of manage her business, cooking to the cafeteria and take care of the 14 year old son. The only thing Ishe does for fun, but that is already incorporated into the routine of the weekend, is going to watch her son plays football on Sundays, when she does not work.
The business would not run exactly bad, but Estelle wanted to give a heated, especially after seeing her neighbors in front, having to close the doors of their bookstore after 30 years because the business did not give more profit. As an indirect suggestion of neighbor, Estelle decides to make an announcement and create a book club, which would meet on Thursdays, every 15 days.

This group is heterogeneous and as the first time talks about a classic book. But despite the talk, the feeling did not seem to flow well and Estelle fears that her book club sink before even start. The book is very well written with many great stretches of dialogue. Talking about a very current topic in a wonderful pace that makes you not want to put the book down until you finish reading. It's a light reading, making you smile and wish good things to happen nice people.
The connection to the characters is immediate because they are believable. The passages occurred, the thoughts of the characters are totally believable, it could happen to anyone.
Besides that, once again, be able to read an unique book is wonderful (no series or trilogy!!!)l.
